Sprint Announces Ultra-Rugged Android Smartphone

U.S. carrier Sprint has announced an ultra-rugged Android smartphone in the form of the Kyocera Torque. The Kyocera Torque sports a 4-inch WVGA screen and is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual core Qualcomm MSM8960 processor, as well as 1 GB of RAM.

4G LTE connectivity is also included, as is a 5-megapixel camera, NFC, 4 GB of internal storage (which can be expanded up to 32 GB via a microSD slot), and a 2,500mAh battery. It'll run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The company has also made efforts to ensure the phone can stand up to some every day wear and tear.
"Anyone will quickly appreciate the durability of this smartphone, whether you work in rugged environments or just enjoy outdoor activities," said David Owens, vice president of Product Development.
"It seems like everyone I talk to has damaged a phone by dropping it on a hard surface. This phone is for all those customers who want to make sure even if that happens, the phone will withstand the fall. This is an impressive Android device that can withstand extreme conditions while bringing our customers the speed of Sprint 4G LTE and convenience of instant push-to-talk communications from Sprint Direct Connect."
Sprint says that the device is waterproof and can function in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. The carrier said it still functions after being dropped 26 times from four feet high and can survive heavy dust for six hours.

A Dual-Screen Smartphone

Dual-screen smartphones are few and far between, but NTT DoCoMo and NEC apparently think a pair of displays is better one one, hence the new clamshell Medias W N-05E announced in Japan today. Joining two qHD 960 x 540 4.3-inch screens with a hinge on the right, allowing the display on the rear to be twisted forward and make for an almost-square 960 x 1080 touchscreen.

Inside, there’s a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 processor paired with 1GB of RAM, running Android 4.1, along with a 2,100 mAh battery, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. The rear camera runs to 8-megapixels, and there’s a front-facer too; the 16GB of internal storage can be augmented with a microSD card (up to 32GB in size). Connectivity includes LTE.
It’s not the first time we’ve seen an NEC clamshell of this sort. A little less than a year ago, the company showed off a prototype of this very handset, though without any hardware details or, in fact, a working concept.

The two displays can be used as a single, stretched panel, or to run two apps independently. It’s also possible to flip the N-05E by 90-degrees and use the bottom panel as a sizeable touchscreen keyboard.
NTT DoCoMo claims the new phone will last up to 460hrs on LTE standby (up to 630hrs if on 3G), while talktime is up to 500 minutes on a 3G network. Of course, talking is a very different proposition from using two potentially-power-hungry displays, and you’ll have to accomodate a 12.2mm thick device in your pocket or bag.
That power issue is arguably what has prevented twin-screen phones from storming the market. Kyocera attempted it, with 2011′s Echo, and Fujitsu flirted with doubled-up displays even earlier, but battery concerns – and a shortage of apps to take explicit advantage of the extra screen – have kept the impact minimal.
NTT DoCoMo will offer the Medias W N-05E from April in Japan, though there’s no word on whether NEC will sell the smartphone elsewhere in the world.

Audi unveils in-car 4G LTE wireless broadband

Audi AG has unveiled the 2013 Audi A3 with 4GLTE wireless connectivity powered by the second generation Gobi multi-mode 3G/4G LTE chipset, the MDM9215, by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
With peak data rates approaching 100 megabits per second, the enhanced “Audi connect” services in the A3 are expected to transform the user experience and provide enhanced features such as an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot, Internet radio, Web services and an augmented navigation system that presents street level visual imagery streamed to the vehicle.
“Audi was the first automaker to highlight the potential for LTE connectivity in vehicles at CES 2012 and now becomes the first automaker to announce a commercial model with embedded 4G LTE connectivity,” said Ricky Hudi, chief executive engineer of electrics/electronics, Audi AG.“As a highlight, we will soon be offering a fully integrated LTE link for our Audi connect services in the new Audi A3 in 2013.”
The Gobi MDM9215 chipset will be implemented by Audi in the automotive module. The solution will power Audi connect with 4G LTE speeds and is designed to enable enhancements to real-time navigation, weather and travel information while providing ultra-fast Wi-Fi hotspot access for up to eight devices in the car.

Qualcomm has been embedding its Gobi technology with leading automakers for more than a decade and is currently the largest supplier of 3G and 4G technologies and chipsets for passenger-car telematics and connected-car services, with tens of millions of connected vehicles in operation worldwide.
“We hope to introduce to automobiles the same 4G LTE connectivity that Qualcomm brought to today’s leading smartphones and mobile computing devices,” said Kanwalinder Singh, senior vice president of business development, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.“The capabilities ofthe MDM9215 chipset allows Audi to define a new in-car media experience, including viewing and interacting with content on the headunit as well as on passengers’ own Wi-Fi-connected smartphones and tablets, all at 4G LTE speeds.”

GSA confirms 347 LTE user devices, with smartphones and tablets leading growth

April 4, 2012: An update to the ‘Status of the LTE Ecosystem’ report published this week by the GSA (Global mobile Suppliers Association) confirms that 63 manufacturers have announced 347 LTE-enabled user devices.
Around 250 new LTE user devices have been announced over the past year.
Alan Hadden, President of the GSA, said: “The main growth trend in 2012 so far is the launch of LTE-capable smartphones and tablets. We report that the number of smartphones has increased by one third since January 2012. The number of LTE-capable tablets increased 72% in the same period.“
According to the GSA report, there are 64 LTE smartphones and 31 tablets, including frequency and carrier variants.
Research for the report considered user devices for FDD and TDD modes, form factors, operating frequencies, and the fallback technologies which are supported when customers move outside the LTE coverage areas (i.e. ability to access HSPA, HSPA+, DC-HSPA+, EV-DO, or TD-SCDMA systems).
347 LTE devices breakdown by form factor:

Note that certain products are carrier or country specific and are not available in all markets.
217 LTE devices also operate on either HSPA, HSPA+ or 42 Mbps DC-HSPA+ networks. Within this figure, 91 LTE devices support 42 Mbps HSPA+ technology.
108 LTE devices support EV-DO networks.
The report also considered the availability of devices by frequency band and support of the likely required combinations. The report findings are summarized below for the main LTE bands:
  • 700 MHz (US Digital Dividend, various bands) 170 devices
  • 800 MHz (EU Digital Dividend, Band 20) 72 devices
  • 1800 MHz (Band 3) 75 devices
  • 2600 MHz (Band 7) 94 devices
  • 800/1800/2600 MHz 57 devices

The majority of LTE user devices today support the 700 MHz band where LTE networks and services are developing fastest, especially in North America. As LTE network rollouts accelerate in other regions, particularly in Europe where operators are primarily using 2600 MHz, 1800 MHz and 800 MHz digital dividend spectrum, in many cases using all three bands, manufacturers are responding with products for these markets. For example, the number of user devices capable of operating in 2600 MHz spectrum (band 7) has increased by 44% since January 2012. The choice of LTE1800 (band 3) devices is rapidly expanding as more operators focus on the opportunities from deploying LTE systems in 1800 MHz spectrum. There are now 75 LTE1800 user devices, which is 50% higher than GSA reported in January 2012. [continues after image]

The range of LTE TDD devices is also expanding as operators in all regions are preparing for a wave of commercial launches of TDD systems. 53 LTE TDD capable devices are included in the 347 total figure.

Cloud RAN

Distributed Node-B architecture called Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) is the new paradigm in base stations architecture that aims to reduce the number of cell sites while increasing the base station deployment density bypassing some of the zoning and construction hurdles to brining up new sites on-air. Metro cities like NY, LA and SFO already have a high density of Cell towers. As LTE and more complex wireless technologies are being deployed – would it not make sense to re-use and harness the existing infrastructure?
The concept of the Cloud RAN comes with a new architecture that breaks down the base station into a Base Unit (BU) – a digital unit that implements the MAC PHY and AAS (Antenna Array System) functionality, and the Remote Radio Head (RRH) that obtains the digital (optical) signals, converts digital signals to analog, amplifies the power, and sends the actual transmission. By making the RRH an active unit capable of converting from analog to digital, operators can now place numerous BUs in a single geographical point while distributing the RRUs according to the RF plans. The RRH becomes an intelligent antenna array which not only submits RF signals but also handles the conversion between digital and modular data. New RRH can also support multiple cellular generation (2G, 3G and LTE) eliminating the need for multiple antennas.
The Cloud RAN lowers operating expenses and simplifies the deployment process. By centralizing all the active electronics of multiple cell sites, at one location (aka the “Base Station Server”), energy, real-estate and security costs are minimized. The RRH can be mounted outdoor or indoor – on poles, sides of buildings or anywhere a power and a broadband connection exist, making installation less costly and easier. The RRH is typically connected using fiber to the BU, creating cloud-like radio access network topology.  This topology saves costs both during the installation and later on technology upgrades for both software as well as hardware saving the operators millions of dollars in CAPEX/OPEX.

Next-generation LTE technology has been making its presence felt across the Asia Pacific region as mobile
operators progressively roll out commercial services.At present, LTE services are largely limited to
USB modems due to a lack of compatible mobile devices. However, we expect the situation to begin
changing in 2012, and the large-scale launch of 4G smartphones and tablet computers should herald a new
generation of mobile VAS.

Besides services such as video streaming and video conferencing, the machine-to-machine (M2M) market
could be one area that could receive more attention from Asian companies following the launch of LTE
services. M2M technologies refer to the ability of different devices to communicate and relay information.

Self-Organising Network (SON)

The logo of the NGMN Alliance The vision of self-organizing networks (SON), which is in line with the views of 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) and the NGMN (Next Generation Mobile Networks) group, is that future radio access networks needs to be easier to plan, configure, manage, optimize and heal compared to how it used to be.SON has been codified by the 3GPP Release 8 specifications in a series of standards including 36.902\ as well as public white papers outlining use cases from the NGMN.

The first technology making use of SON features will be UMTS Long Term Evolution. The LTE specification inherently supports SON features like Automatic Neighbor Relation (ANR) detection, which is the 3GPP LTE Rel. 8 flagship feature.
Newly added base stations should be self-configured in line with a ‘plug-and-play’ paradigm, while all operational base stations will regularly self-optimize parameters and algorithmic behavior in response to observed network performance and radio conditions. Furthermore, self-healing mechanisms can be triggered to temporarily compensate for a detected equipment outage, while awaiting a more permanent solution.

What Smartphones Will Be Like in 2012

Since the advent of the first modern smartphone--arguably the original Apple iPhone in 2007--the power of these mobile computing devices that also happen to make phone calls has advanced by leaps and bounds.
Weak processors have given way to dual-core powerhouses. Smartphone cameras are now so capable, the best of them make owning a point-and-shoot camera redundant. And display resolutions exceed the limits of the human eye's ability to distinguish separate pixels.
But that doesn't mean smartphones have no room left for innovation in 2012. Here's a look at what phone makers might pack into next year's models.

Quad-Core Processors Arrive

Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core mobile processorThough 2011 was the year of dual-core, 2012 will bring quad-core processors to smartphones. Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processor is said to be five times faster than the dual-core Tegra 2, which debuted this year. Qualcomm, meanwhile, is planning to launch quad-core Snapdragon CPUs with speeds up to 2.5GHz, and with quad-core Adreno graphics processors for gaming.

Near-Field Communication Takes Off

Paying through NFCUsing an NFC-equipped phone to pay.Near-field communication is the technology that lets you wave a phone in front of a payment kiosk in place of a credit card. To make that happen, phone makers and wireless carriers have to put NFC capabilities in their smartphones, credit card companies need to handle the transactions, and retailers must install kiosks that accept the payments. Next year, everything may finally fall into place.
Google Wallet got a head start on the pay-by-phone front this year, but it will have lots of competition in 2012. Wireless carriers have banded together on their own NFC payment plan, called Isis, and Apple is rumored to be putting NFC in future iPhones. Research in Motion has included NFC capabilities in its BlackBerry Bold 9900 and the BlackBerry Curve 9350/9360/9370. Don't expect NFC to kill the credit card next year, but do expect plenty of retailers to accept NFC payments by year's end.

Displays With 720-Pixel HD Resolution Become Standard

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the HTC Rezound are among the first smartphones to boast 720p (1280-by-720-pixel) displays. Next year, 720p resolution will become the standard for high-end smartphones, and handset makers may even figure out how to fit those pixels into even smaller screens than the 4.3-inch display in the Rezound. The result should be beautiful smartphone screens whose individual pixels are impossible to tell apart.

LTE Technology Everywhere

4G LTE Technology by VerizonThis year was an experimental one for 4G LTE, which offers dramatic speed increases over 3G networks. Although Verizon was early with the technology, its first LTE phones--the HTC ThunderBolt and the Samsung Droid Charge--had inferior tech specs, and even newer handsets tend to drain their battery when LTE is switched on. AT&T is just getting out of the gate now, and Sprint is starting its LTE rollout in early 2012, so at some point next year 4G LTE will become standard among high-end smartphones. Let's hope that phone makers and wireless carriers can figure out how to stop the battery drain by then.

Voice Control Moves In

Following the launch of Siri in Apple's iPhone 4S, Google and Microsoft are no doubt scrambling to bring more voice controls to their respective smartphone platforms. As for Siri, there's a slight chance that Apple will open up the virtual personal assistant to third-party apps in 2012; more likely, however, the company will expand Siri's functionality in some fashion before the year is over.

Better Phones Cost Less

Better phones will cost lessAs cutting-edge phone tech improves, so too does the average stuff. With Apple’s iPhone 3GS sticking around for another year for free with a two-year contract, we’ll probably see some strong competition in the $0-to-$50 range--not just with Android, but with Windows Phones, as well. (Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has said that “the cheapest phones will be Android, and we are going to have to look at bringing the cost of our handsets down.”)

The Contract-Free Battle Intensifies

Motorola TriumphMotorola TriumphEven though the fight for smartphone superiority mainly involves the major wireless carriers, a separate battle is brewing on the contract-free front. Sprint's Virgin Mobile brand and T-Mobile's no-contract plan through Walmart are the main combatants, offering decent Android smartphones for $35 per month and $30 per month, respectively. Expect strong follow-ups to Virgin’s Motorola Triumph and T-Mobile’s Samsung Exhibit II 4G as prepaid carriers go to war.

Augmented Reality Arrives

Augmented reality is another feature we've seen on a few apps here and there, but Ramon T. Lamas of IDC predicts that AR will become a standard, everyday feature in the phones of tomorrow, as opposed to being limited to one-off apps such as Google Goggles or the Layar browser.
We've already encountered a bit of that approach in the form of Bing's visual search, which is built right into the Windows Phone 7 platform. If you're traveling or just exploring your own neighborhood, for instance, you can point your phone at your surroundings, and the app will show an overlay indicating historic landmarks nearby.

No Big Battery Breakthroughs

No phone battery breakthroughsWhile smartphones will continue to improve noticeably in processor power, screen quality, and data speeds, their battery life is likely to see only minor improvements. The major technological breakthroughs that could keep users from worrying about getting through the day are still in the laboratory, so the best hope for better battery life lies in optimization. Nvidia’s Tegra 3 processors, for instance, have a hidden fifth core that draws a small amount of battery life for basic tasks, and the Motorola Droid Razr can turn off battery-intensive functions automatically to conserve power. For now, however, the true 24-hour battery is still a dream.

5G Mobile Phone Concept

On the other side, there are many wireless technologies that have proven to be important, with the most important ones being 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) and 802.16 Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMAN), as well as ad-hoc Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) and wireless networks for digital TV and radio broadcast. Then, the concepts of 4G is already much discussed and it is almost certain that 4G will include several standards under a common umbrella, similarly to 3G, but with IEEE 802.xx wireless mobile networks included from the beginning. The main contribution of this paper is definition of 5G (Fifth Generation) mobile network concept, which is seen as user-centric concept instead of operator-centric as in 3G or service-centric concept as seen for 4G. In the proposed concept the mobile user is on the top of all. The 5G terminals will have software defined radios and modulation scheme as well as new error-control schemes can be downloaded from the Internet on the run. The development is seen towards the user terminals as a focus of the 5G mobile networks. The terminals will have access to different wireless technologies at the same time and the terminal should be able to combine different flows from different technologies. Each network will be responsible for handling user-mobility, while the terminal will make the final choice among different wireless/mobile access network providers for a given service.

It's essentially a new company which has been granted Wi Max frequencies in Nigeria. They have received a license to operate at a National level. Their equipment comes from Huawei.
They Plan to go commercial by August 2011. The Initial launch will be in Lagos, which is the commercial capital of Nigeria. License is National. In 2 years time will migrate to LTE.The project is for provision of Internet service on Wi Max platform and installation of OFC and related bandwidth service in a metropolitan market.

Position : Senior Manager / Manager Projects for Wimax, LTE

Person Specifications : Age around 30 - 35 years, the candidate should have a BE in Electronics and Telecom. The candidate should have around 8 to 10years of workex in the telecom industry, of which atleast 5 should have been in Wimax and LTE. He should be wellversed in Wimax, LTE , technologies and applications, in a Broadband company preferably

The Role : The candidates should have hands on experience in design, implementation, commissioning, integration, O&M and optimization of LTE & WiMAX. Should be well versed and have hands on experience in design, data base preparation, commissioning, integration, acceptance testing etc for Wimax & LTE both.


Salary : Taxfree Savings in USdollars ( paid monthly ,remitted every quarter ) + local salary for a comfortable living + Furnished Accomodation for self and family + Company maintained car and driver and other expatriate benefits.

Call for participation: FP7 SOCRATES Final Workshop on SELF-ORGANISATION IN MOBILE NETWORKS (Co-located with IWSOS 2011)

Date and location: February 22, 2011 - Karlsruhe, Germany

The goal of this open workshop is to disseminate the results achieved by the FP7 project SOCRATES (www.fp7-socrates.eu) and to stimulate discussions on the topic of self-organisation in future mobile networks. The program comprises presentations from SOCRATES and invited talks by renowned experts in the field. The SOCRATES project will also provide demonstrations of its results on self-optimisation, self-healing and self‑configuration in LTE networks. Through interactions with the participants and the invited speakers, the consortium wants to promote and discuss its views and approaches on self-organising methods for beyond 3G mobile networks.

The workshop addresses both academic researchers and engineers. It mainly aims at research responsibles, R&D engineers and technical developers involved in planning, deployment or operations & maintenance of beyond 3G networks, within telecom operators, telecom vendors and SMEs and large companies active in the telecom sector.
