BitTorrent announces cloud storage and sharing service Sync

Cloud backup services are popping up everywhere these days, with even BitTorrent now jumping onto the cloud craze. BitTorrent has announced a new cloud backup service it calls Sync, and though it of course has plenty of similarities with other cloud services out there, Sync offers a couple key differences. By using Sync, you’re actually using BitTorrent’s servers to transfer files from one device to another.

This has a number of benefits, as it means you won’t be subject to size restrictions like you are with other services. One of the major headaches with services like Dropbox and SkyDrive is that you’re limited in how much you can have in your synced folders – for Dropbox, for instance, you get 2GB of free space, and that runs out quick when you’re trying to sync multiple video files at once. Once you’ve hit that cap, you’ll need to shell out some cash if you want more space.

That’s not a major complaint, as these are companies that exist to make money after all. BitTorrent’s Sync, on the other hand, is free to use. You won’t have to worry about limits on the amount you can transfer from one device to another, which probably sounds like a Godsend to those who constantly have to rely on cloud services to move files between devices.
As cool as it sounds, there’s one slight problem: BitTorrent Sync isn’t available to use just yet (unless you love pre-alpha testing). It’s currently in the testing stages, but it shouldn’t be more than a few months before Sync is available to BitTorrent users. What do you think of this new cloud service from the people behind BitTorrent?

Easily Capture Screenshots in Google Earth for Android

The Google Earth app for Android includes a handy screen capture feature that allows you to capture and share screenshot images of the current view inside Earth with a click. You may capture screenshots of aerial imagery as well as 3D buildings.
You may wonder why would anyone need this when Android itself include screen-capture capabilities? Well, compare these two images.

The big advantage with Google Earth’s built-in screen capture feature is that it adds none of the on-screen clutter to your screenshot.

How to take Screenshots in Google Earth

To get started, navigate to any location inside Google Earth and click the More menu in the upper-right corner. Now choose the Share option from the drop-down and Google Earth will automatically take a screenshot image of the current view.
You can then directly save that screenshot to Dropbox, Gmail, Facebook or any other application that is part of the system-wide Share menu.

The screen-capture feature is not available inside the Google Maps app for Android but you can use another app called Skitch to capture clean screenshots of your Google Maps.
Open the Skitch app and choose Draw on Map. Now search for a location on Google Maps and tap the “tick” symbol to save a screenshot of the current view.

The Best Mind Mapping App for iOS is now Free

If you have an iPhone or an iPad, here’s a mind-mapping app that you should not miss.
Mind Manager for iPhone and iPad
Mindjet is a neat iOS app that you may use to create mind maps, capture notes or to brainstorm ideas on your iPhone or iPad. The app was earlier selling in the iTunes store for $8.99 but, with the upcoming launch of Mind Manager 2012, the mobile app is now available as a free download.
Getting started with Mindjet is easy. Tap and hold a topic to create a child or a sub-topic. Double-tap to change the formatting or the shape of a node. You may also include images, hyperlinks and additional text in the various nodes.
You can connect the Mindjet app to your Dropbox account and the mind map files created on the iOS device will automatically synchronize with your PC or Mac folder. Since the app uses the native .mmap format, mind maps created on the iOS device can also be edited using Mind Manager software on the desktop and vice-versa.
Other alternatives to the Mindjet app include MindMeister, iThoughts HD and MindNode.
