Now Facebook to set up Wi-Fi at rural Indian railway stations after Google Initiatives

Social media giant Facebook may tie up with the Indian Railways to set up Wi-Fi services at railway stations across India, according to a report by ET. The information comes in months after Google launched its own free Wi-Fi at select locations in the country.

A statement given by Indian Railways’ communication wing RailTel chairman RK Bahuguna quoted him saying that Facebook had approached them to be able to bring Wi-Fi to rural India. The partnership will try to offer connectivity not just to the railway stops but also to surrounding villages.

RailTel already has the infrastructure to install Wi-Fi hotspots across 4000 railway stations throughout the country in place. Taking Facebook’s initiative, the company will attempt to extend network in a 10 kilometer radius from the station using additional access points. The range will increase to around 25 kilometers thereafter. The aim will be to target smaller and mostly ignored areas where internet is not widely available.

Facebook denied giving a comment on the story. It was recently in the news for testing its Express Wi-Fi service that sets up hotspots in areas without data range. This was a step ahead from its first idea of Free Basics to provide internet to India.

Google had collaborated with RailTel to set up free Wi-Fi zones at select railway stations. Its offering is attempting to cover 100 stops by the end of this year and around 400 additional places eventually. Google Allo is a messaging app which will compete with the likes of Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and iMessage. Surprisingly, Allo isn’t a Hangouts replacement but its own standalone app coming to iOS and Android soon, but what makes it stand out from the myriad of other messaging apps available?


The main difference is that Allo comes with some machine learning built in, courtesy of Google Assistant, the company’s virtual assistant. As explained by Engineering Director Erik Kay on stage at Google I/O 2016, Allo is a ‘smart’ messaging app that learns over time to make conversations both easier and more productive. That’s all well and good, but what does that actually mean?
Firstly, you’ll be presented with Smart Replies. These aren’t stagnated quick reply options like you see on other messaging platforms, oh no – Google claims that Assistant will learn over time and provide you with personalised answers that you’d actually use. It’ll work when asked things like if you want to go out for dinner, but will also suggest responses to photos because, Google being Google, the company can analyse the photo and its contents, understand the context and suggest a response. Pretty cool, right? You can see it in action below:


However, if you thought it ended there, you’d be wrong. Much like Facebook’s chatbots, you can talk directly to Google Assistant via text directly in Allo, allowing you to search for movies and more all without leaving the app. You can type “@Google” in the chat window to talk directly to Google Assistant, and it’ll provide you with what you require – be it search results or a funny GIF to share with friends. It’s contextual and will remember previous conversations so you can just carry on where you left off last time if necessary.

That’s not all, though -  say, for example, you and a friend are discussing where to go for dinner, a smart reply might suggest a dinner reservation. You’ll be able to tap that and be shown a restaurant reservation card full of nearby restaurants, and can even make a reservation via OpenTable quickly and naturally. You can also play games with Google Assistant as demoed during Google I/O, but these seem a little basic at the moment.

What else does Allo offer? Apart from Google Assistant support, Allo is a fairly simple-to-use but feature hungry messaging app. You sign up with your mobile number much like WhatsApp instead of a Google account, as it means both iOS and Android users can use the service without having to join the Google ecosystem.

Facebook Plans Commercial Launch Of Rural WiFi In India

Social networking giant Facebook is in talks with internet service providers (ISPs) to expand its Express Wi-Fi program into a commercial launch in India, having completed a pilot roll out of 125 rural public Wi-Fi hotspots in a tie-up with state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.

Express Wi-Fi is a Mark Zuckerberg-headed Internet giant's initiative aimed at taking affordable broadband to the rural areas of the country in partnerships with internet service companies and small entrepreneurs.

"We are testing Express Wi-Fi program in India currently that allows customers to purchase fast, reliable and affordable data packages from their local ISP (internet service providers) to access the Internet via local hotspots," a Facebook India spokesperson said.

Facebook, however, did not reveal the names of service providers that it is in discussions with, and has left it to its partners to come up with a scalable business model. The social media company on its part has developed customized software for rural markets which will help ISPs and/or entrepreneurs to run a business within their localities, helping bridge coverage gaps in the India's rural cellular data networks.

"Facebook is investing in the development of the connectivity ecosystem by providing techno-commercial assistance to local ISP partners and entrepreneurs," a person aware of the matter said.

Facebook's previous initiative to connect the unconnected through Free Basics had to be pulled out from India after the telecom regulator banned discriminatory pricing of data services, which included zero-rated services.

But India continues to remain key for Facebook's future, with 462 million, or around a third of the population with Internet access in June, according to an IAMAI report. An Akamai Technologies report puts India at 131 out of 189 countries in terms of broadband penetration, underlining the potential.

India's telecom regulator is also seeking to give a push to public Wifi in the country for the spread of affordable broadband through a consultation process.

Citing industry data, the watchdog added that the increase in the number of Wi-Fi hotspots from 2013 to 2016 has been 568% worldwide while India has demonstrated a growth of a mere 12% during the same period.

"For India to reach a goal of one hotspot for every 150 people, 8 lakh additional hotspots will have to be installed," the regulator said.

BMW creates the best smartphone vehicle performance and connectivity app

A lot of performance oriented cars these days offer track-specific features. The 2013 Ford Mustang GT, for example, has some built-in Track Apps that allow the driver to see G-forces, 0-60 times, etc.
BMW has gone one step further, though, creating the ‘BMW M Power App.’ When downloaded and synced with a BMW Apps-equipped car, the BMW M Power App allows users to record laps on the track. The app not only looks at braking, throttle position, and lap times but also brings together navigation.
As you can see in the image above, the app then makes a detailed birds-eye view of the track with acceleration and braking points as well as turn-by-turn steering wheel position.

From this view you can virtually play back your entire lap and monitor speeds, temperatures, RPMs, amongst several other data points. From there you can share these with your friends through the app or (of course) through social media.

What’s extremely cool is that the BMW M Power App will generate track mapping on the fly, if the track isn’t in it database, as it had to do with the Circuit of the Americas as seen in the video below.

Now, do note that the app is not yet available and,should be released sometime this summer.

EMBRACE+ bracelet provides smartphone notifications using light and color

EMBRACE+ is a new piece of wearable electronics currently in development, that wirelessly connects to a smartphone and lights up in different colors in conjunction with notifications received on the phone. The idea is that if the phone is tucked away in a bag, or not right near the user, he or she would be able to tell what kind of notification the device has received and whether or not it's something they will need to address immediately.

The bracelet can notify users of all kinds of events that occur on the phone. Some examples of the types of notifications users can receive through the bracelet are as follows:

The bracelet can light up in a single color for a specific event, or users can opt to use two different colors for each notification. The number of blinks, duration of blinks, speed interval, brightness, and whether there is a short vibration can also be tweaked by the wearer.
Everything is adjusted using the Android or iOS EMBRACE+ app. It comes with a color wheel that allows a complete range of hues to be used for each notification. It will also offer the ability to save profiles for quick access to certain settings.

The bracelet itself uses optical fibers tucked inside of a transparent core that runs through the whole band. This is coated in a transparent cladding that allows the light to leave the core and shine around the entire device. It also comes in three different shapes, so users can choose one that matches their style.
The creators of the EMBRACE+ are seeking funding on Kickstarter to help with purchasing molds, setting up tooling, and developing the mobile applications that make the whole thing come together. The minimum backing to receive a bracelet in one of the three available styles is US$49.

Facebook To Announce Its Own Smartphone, Messenger For iPad On Tuesday

What’s up Zuckerberg’s sleeve for this Tuesday?

Facebook is holding a big press event this Tuesday, January 15th, and when it comes to what the social network behemoth has up its sleeve, speculation abounds. Rumors about a Facebook smartphone have been swirling for years, with a report from March of last year claiming that Facebook was hiring Apple engineers who had previously worked on the iPhone and iPad.
The mysterious Facebook smartphone could finally become a reality this week. Facebook is also rumored to bring its Messenger iOS app to the iPad.
On the Facebook-branded phone front, MG Siegler of TechCrunch reports that “multiple sources have told us that they expect some sort of Facebook Phone to be on display on Tuesday.” Siegler makes it very clear that details are slim:

It’s not entirely clear if this will be an actual piece of Facebook branded hardware or if they will simply use hardware from a phone maker to show off some sort of new Facebook OS for mobile. That is to say, it could very well be that the “Facebook Phone” is more about a Facebook OS running on a phone (or a few phones).

Facebook could potentially use its own smartphone OS, but going with a flavor of Android (like Amazon with the Kindle) seems more plausible. The device could be angled as an iPhone competitor, but it will most likely sell at a cheaper price tag for emerging markets.
Separately, Alexia Tsotsis of TechCrunch is reporting that Facebook for Messenger is also in the wings for Tuesday:

Specifically I’m hearing that Messenger for iPad, replete with all the Messenger features we’ve come to love like emoticons, photosharing, read receipts, location tagging, group messaging, and the new voice-recorded messaging feature, is ready for the public eye. And basically, it’s what exists on the iPad but in a bigger format.
According to one source, the app is “totally” ready to launch on Tuesday, and if the event is indeed a series of mobile product announcements, it could “totally” fit in conceptually.

Facebook Messenger was released as a separate app on the iPhone back in August 2011. Facebook is notoriously slow at releasing iPad apps for some reason, but it looks like Messenger may finally be ready.
There’s not much else to go on for Tuesday’s event. Facebook recently bought Instagram, and it would be great if an iPad app was announced this week onstage. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

iWatch: Apple 'secretly developing smart watch with a touch screen'

The Apple iWatch

Apple is said to be secretly developing a smart watch with a touch screen that can be used to text, send emails and link to Facebook.
Dubbed the iWatch, the device is said to have a 1.5in screen that can communicate with other devices such as the tech giant’s iPhone.
Apple manufactures its products in China and sources there said the company was working with a computer chip maker.
If the rumours are true the watch is likely to be the must-have device of 2013 among a range of amazing gadgets.
Google is also set to release its Google Glass, a pair of spectacles that users can talk to in order to take pictures, send a text, use Google maps and make videos.
Another smart watch is also in development.
Called Pebble, the watch can be used by runners and cyclists to track their training while also changing songs. Messages and emails will also pop up on the screen.

Facebook app now auto-uploads smartphone photos

Facebook is releasing photo sync for iOS to the general Facebook community, after months of testing.
The new feature, available for Android and the iPhone, automatically uploads photos taken on a smartphone to a private album on a user's Facebook profile. Those photos can then be removed, kept private, or shared publicly. A total of 2GB worth of photos can be stored from mobile devices.
Facebook said it began testing photo sync in August and "will continue to make it available to more people."
Don't like the idea of your photos automatically sent to your Facebook profile? No worries, users don't have to activate the feature. But, if you want it, you'll need to use the latest version of the Facebook app, and turn on the syncing manually.

What you know - This includes your background, training and skill sets. They want to find out if you have the skills to do the job and if you are someone who thinks outside of the box or someone who prefers to stick with tried and true methods. Neither of these are wrong, but most employers know which type of person they are looking for, depending on the position they are trying to fill.

How do you handle change or conflict - Employers want to know that the person they hire has a good handle on social and interpersonal skills. 


Balance - If you say that you've always done an excellent job at everything you have ever done, have no weaknesses and already know everything, then the employer might think that you aren't realistic. Don't be afraid to show how you have grown, that you are aware of the areas where you need more growth and that you aren't always perfect. Of course, you don't want to overdo this, but don't be afraid of everything you think isn't "perfect" in your work history.


Blaming others and trash talking - When they ask about previous employers and other times that you have worked as a team, don't take this as an opportunity to pull out all of the dirty laundry. In fact, you should never, ever talk bad about anyone during an interview. Employers are listening to what you say in order to find out if you are the type of person who gives credit to others and if you are able to take responsibility.


Personality type - The interviewer wants to know what kind of person you are. When you answer their questions, they are looking to find out if you are have compassion, wisdom and the willingness to listen and think before acting. For any job opening, the hiring manager has an idea of what type of person they are looking for and what qualities are best suited for the job. Know what they are and make sure that you show those sides of yourself when answering questions during the interview.


Just being able to understand what the employer is looking for is the best first step to preparing for your interview. Do some research to find out what skills and talents the company needs and frame your answers in that direction.

Control Your PC's Settings With Roccat Smartphone App

During GDC 2012, peripheral manufacturer Roccat Studios introduced the Roccat Power-Grid app, a solution that lets users control their PC games and other computer applications in real time straight from their smartphone.
The free app comes standard with four control displays -- or "grids" -- three of which are preloaded with a wide range of essential gaming tools. The first "Incoming Center" grid routes all outside voice and text communication from services like Skype, Facebook, TeamSpeak and Twitter to an at-a-glance display on the smartphone.
ZoomThe second grid, called "Stats Control," lets users quickly and easily monitor their PC's vital data via the smartphone. Stats include CPU status, hard drive space, network traffic and more. The third pre-loaded grid is called "Sound Control," and as the name implies, allows users to set and fine tune every aspect of their gaming audio using just their smartphone.
As for the fourth grid, it's completely customizable. Custom control icons, or "blocks," can be created using the free Roccat Power-Grid Launcher download which installs on the PC and connects your rig to the smartphone. Users can create individually-designed macro buttons from their favorite games or design a specialty button like a pizza timer.
According to Roccat, the app is just the tip of the iceberg. "At the end of the year, gamers will be able to connect their Power-Grid-loaded smartphone to ROCCAT Smart Gear – new gaming hardware that delivers the ultimate smart gaming experience," the company states. "First on the horizon is Project Phobo – the 'Phone Board.' The Phobo is not only one of the world’s most advanced gaming keyboards, it’s also the perfect home for a smartphone using Power-Grid."

Once gamers have connected their Power-Grid-enabled smartphone to the Phobo, they’ll never need to separate the two, the company claims. Players will be able to write any kind of text message via Facebook, Skype etc using the Phobo’s keyboard. Phobo, also serving as a smartphone charger, will even let gamers take voice calls with a connected headset.
Roccat also plans on introducing the Apuri 2.0 (seen below), a Roccat Smart Gear gaming assistant that acts as a stylish stand for a gamer’s Power-Grid-enabled smartphone. "It's the perfect way to keep it charged for when a player needs to step away from the game," the company adds.

"Some gaming companies claim PC gaming is sick and needs help," says René Korte, Roccat Founder and CEO. “We at Roccat have never thought that. We know PC gaming is alive and well. It just needs to keep evolving. Power-Grid represents that natural evolution.
Initial versions of Power-Grid work with all Apple iPhone and iPod Touch devices using the latest version of iOS. In addition to a compatible smartphone, Power-Grid requires a PC with Wi-Fi capability. Roccat will launch Power-Grid for Android smartphones at Gamescom 2012. Access Facebook on any Mobile Without the Internet

Do you have an old mobile phone, like the Nokia 1100, that has no browser and can do little more than make phone calls? Or are you stuck in some remote place where there’s no Internet or no other form of data (EGDE/GPRS/3G) connectivity is available?
Not a problem. You can still use your Facebook account in India by dialing *325# (or *fbk#) from your mobile phone – this service requires no data plan or Internet and it will even work on phones of the Stone Age. Here’s a quick tour:
        

Use Facebook without the Data Plan

Facebook India has partnered with Fonetwish to bring Facebook on every mobile phone without requiring any apps or even the Internet.
You dial the *325# number, then enter your Facebook username and password and you are in. You can then send number based commands to access various features of Facebook, chat with friends who are online, add new people to your friends list, and more.
I played with the service for some time and it was a nice experience overall. If there were a Unix-like shell interface for Facebook, it would be much similar. Fonetwish says that this service is currently available for Airtel, Aircel, Idea and Tata Docomo users in India.
It may be too much work to read your Facebook news feed stories one by one but this is a good option to quickly update your Facebook status or for chatting with friends who are online. The price is reasonable too – you just have pay a subscription fee of 1.00 per day for unlimited usage.
