WiMAX Network Survey:Guideline

In a series on how to plan a city-wide wireless WiMAX network.

Companies or cities that have decided to or are considering building and operating wireless broadband networks have several important issues to consider in terms of how to proceed. Once demographic, competitive, financial, commercial and/or residential market analysis is complete, the operator must conduct a thorough engineering site survey of the area to be served. Once that is completed, the data learned and gathered during the survey will aid in the development of a preliminary network design.

The initial spectrum for WiMAX in the US is unlicensed spectrum in the 5GHz range. Given that this spectrum is 'open to the public', it has inherent interference issues and risks which need to be studied carefully. A quality site survey can provide an invaluable insight into current or potential interference issues. As will be discussed in the WiMAX network design document, there are many effective ways to minimize interference in unlicensed WiMAX networks both from a site selection and equipment selection perspective.

The In-field Site Survey
A site survey is required, in short, because the operator wants to minimize the "unknowns" regarding the network prior to construction and the operator wants to develop a vision of "how" the network will work once it is built.

A site survey provides the necessary information for a complete WiMAX network blueprint, or design, which is needed in order to minimize hurdles and costly mistakes as the network is being built-out. A quality site survey will be precise to the last frequency, spectrum analysis, connector, nut & bolt.

There are many tools, online databases and mapping resources available that were developed specifically for wireless broadband technologies and applications. Much of the pre-survey and post-survey planning can be done with reasonable accuracy hundreds of miles away. There are "predictable" formulas that can be applied to the variables on any network rollout. But unlike copper or fiber networks, there are variables in a wireless network with which trained and experienced network engineers and administrators are quite often unfamiliar.
These wireless network variables include:
  • The impact of the fresnel zone on signal propagation
  • The difference between passive gain and powered amplification, and when use of each is appropriate
  • The orchestration of sector, space, frequency and polar diversification(s)
  • The use of a Front to Back ratio
  • How many channels are available for use and where are potential interferers located
  • The +/- 3dB rule and how it influences the link budget
  • How and why "application" must drive the hardware
  • Lastly, what to do when the light just won't come on
All these engineering variables apply to site-specific situations, scenarios and topology. Most represent only a fraction of the "issues" that will be encountered, and must be addressed during the deployment of a wireless network.
Quality wireless network engineers will have years of in-the-field experience recognizing and solving these issues. As wireless network planning is concerned, more information equals higher engineering and performance accuracy, which minimizes the total cost of network deployment. The operator's goal is to design a quality network with no surprises at the end.
Some elements of a standard RF site survey:
  • A quality site survey starts several days before the site visit by documenting tower and other attachment sites available. Once these sites have been researched and documented, they should be geo-coded on a topological map to assist in selection of best candidates once on the ground. This prep work and mapping work will also reduce the time on the ground, thus reducing the overall site survey costs.
  • Geo-code and photo-document the target locations (mounting points, cable runs, electrical closets, etc.) This allows the engineering firm to recommend what components are needed in the network, not what is generally or historically needed.


  • Perform and document multi-spectrum (900MHz, 2.4GHz, 4.9 GHz, 5.3 and 5.8GHz) activity by utilizing a spectrum analysis, as appropriate to the application. This allows engineers to work around potential frequency issues before the fact, not onsite during installation with tower rigger crews charging by the hour as they wait for the solution.
  • Spectrum analysis can be accomplished with varying degrees of precision. A scan of a frequency can be done in 10 minutes (with minimal collection of data) or in 10 hours (with considerably more data collection). It's even recommended to sweep both horizontal and vertical polarities, something most firms do not do.
  • Detect and document existing wireless networks including SSID and frequency info.
  • Verify available mounting locations/altitudes which aids in an accurate site parts list.
  • Initial verification and planning for available A/C power helping eliminate onsite power issues.
  • Verify visual LOS to target feeder tower's (potential tower bearings having already been determined pre-survey). This is a redundancy check against engineering software for potential manmade obstructions not represented in the software calculations.
  • Verify available space on recommended towers (expedites the lease process by getting it right the first time) and the type of tower utilized. This information is provided to the tower owners during the lease process, and to the tower riggers and/or equipment vendor to insure that the right kind of mounting brackets are ready before installation.
  • Deploy and evaluate a temporary test link to verify RF functionality for less than certain solutions. For all the recent science and technology, nothing works as dependably as installing and testing a system first.
  • A detailed view of the operator's current or planned backhaul location and documentation of potential hand-off requirements.
  • Identify many more location-specific issues that must be addressed and resolved in the final deployment plan.
  • Identify the general tree foliage environment and document the estimated losses needed to apply to the coverage propagation software. Inputting reasonable losses for foliage will provide a more accurate picture of the overall coverage capability.

Wimax- Smart Grid Applications

With most of the cellular operators inclined towards the deployment and development of LTE, Wimax seems to lose its pace in the 4G race. That does not at all means that we have no Wimax to see in future, in fact it is now thriving with the introduction of Wimax based smart grid applications, machine to machine, public safety and surveillance applications.

Several Wimax smart application projects are underway. General Electric is working on the use of Wimax enabled smart meters, it’s the first ever kind of project in US. Cisco has invested in a Wimax smart application projects with Grid Net and co-partners like Siemens, GE, Accenture, Schneider Electric and Verizon. Alvarion announced its project with National Grid on smart power grid (SPG) using Wimax. Silver Springs Network in Florida provides connectivity to electricity, water and gas meters via Zigbee over a WAN with an IP based network. Microsoft’s SERA (Smart Energy Reference Architecture) is working for the promotion technology in the energy sector in collaboration with Puget Sound Energy, Xcel Energy and Seattle City Light.
 
According to ABI research investment in smart grid will reach up to $45 billion till 2015. With the rise in consumption of electricity has forced us to come up with feasible alternatives like renewable energy. Some are also in favor of solar energy. Wimax based stations of Intel are solar powered. Telenor is working on solar powered networks. Between 2010 and 2012 Alcatel is expected to install 10,000 based stations working on renewable energy.
Undoubtedly the energy demand will keep on escalating with time and the need for discovering renewable and cost effective energy sources will keep on growing. Wireless smart Grid applications may take time to progress but it presents an efficient electrical distribution mechanism.

Another WiMAX Operator Bites the Dust

Worldmax will cease WiMAX operations in Amsterdam by the end of July. It’s the second WiMAX operator to end services after Freedom4 sold its license to Broadband UK last week.
Worldmax blames the Dutch military. The company couldn’t expand its WiMAX offerings because of the interference in the 3.5GHz band. The signal conflicts with the military ground station for an intelligence satellite. Another report blames the inability to secure a 2.6GHz spectrum license. Poor indoor reception and lack of roaming ability also hurt the deployment.
“This restriction imposed by the Ministry of Defense makes us feel like landowners being expropriated on the basis of National and European security. The disillusion amongst us and our shareholders was huge when we saw investments made becoming immediately worthless,” Keimpe B. Algra, CEO Worldmax said, “While I am relieved that we could settle the issue after months of negotiation and uncertainty, it does hurt me badly to conclude that this is the end of a well established mobile broadband venture. This is bad news for our customers and a depletion of the already impoverished telecoms market in the Netherlands”.
Worldmax paid nearly $5 million in the spectrum. Greenfield Capital Partners, an owner of an investment company will lose around $15 million. It costs about$37 million to install the network. This isn’t a good sign for future WiMAX deployments. Two operators, along with Yota’s decision to launch LTE networks might be warning signs that signal the end of major WiMAX deployments.

What Is Mobile-Fi?

MobileFi is also known as Mobile-Fi or Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MBWA) and is better known as IEEE 802.20

IEEE 802.20, also referred to as Mobile-Fi, is optimized for IP and roaming in high-speed mobile environments. This standard is poised to fully mobilize IP, opening up major new data markets beyond the more circuit-centric 2.5G and 3G cellular standards. The Mobile Broadband Wireless Access (MBWA) Working Group was established as IEEE 802.20 in December 2002. Its main mission is to develop the specification for an efficient packet-based air interface optimized for the transport of IP-based services. The goal is to enable global deployment of low-cost, ubiquitous, interoperable, and always-on multivendor mobile broadband wireless access networks. IEEE 802.20 has designed a new physical layer (Layer 1 protocol) and MAC/link layer (Layer 2 protocol) around IP packet Layer 3. It can operate in licensed bands below 3.5GHz, with cell ranges of 9 miles (15 km) or more. IEEE 802.20 can operate at speeds of up to 155 mph (250 kph).
Unlike WiMAX, which was incubated inside IEEE 802.16 family and evolved from earlier 802.16 technologies, 802.20 [5] or Mobile-Fi was designed from ground up as a technology to support high-mobility services. It aims to support mobility as high as 250 km/h and a peak rate of up to 260 Mbps in the licensed spectrum below 3.5 GHz. The enabling technologies are also OFDM, MIMO, and beam-forming. The draft standard is still under the IEEE standardization process.
Both WiMAX and 802.20 use OFDM-MIMO, which is emerging as the main technology for future cellular packet data networks, including 3GPP long-term evolution and 3GPP2 air interface evolution as well.
While the data rate and range of Mobile-Fi are only half those of Mobile WiMax, Mobile-Fi is inherently more mobile. It has an astonishing latency of just 10 milliseconds (500 milliseconds is standard for 3G communications) and can maintain integrity at speeds as high as 155 mph (250 kph), compared to just 60 mph (100 kph) for WiMax. Because it uses more common spectrumlicensed bands up to 3.5GHzit also offers global mobility, handoff, and roaming support. Whereas Mobile WiMax is looking at the mobile user walking around with a PDA or laptop, Mobile-Fi addresses high-speed mobility issues. One key difference is the manner in which the two standards are deployed. One assumption is that the carriers are going to deploy Mobile WiMax in their existing (802.16a) footprint as opposed to deploying a more widespread footprint, like a cellular network. Because Mobile-Fi is aimed at more ubiquitous coverage, a larger footprint will be required.
Countries and companies often seek to control the market by developing standards they hope will dominate the global scene. The United States has led the way with IEEE standards, and the European Union's ETSI standards are their counterparts. The work of standards consensus is ongoing, uncertain, and difficult to predict. Mobile operators, who are generally friendly to Mobile WiMax, see Mobile-Fi as a competing standard that could make their 3G licenses worth rather less than they paid for them. The fact that Intel is behind WiMax is a strong force and will undoubtedly push the WiMax standards forward.
Mobile-Fi will have to overcome several hurdles. First among them is the fact that it can be used only in licensed bands below 3.5GHz. Another is that Mobile-Fi trails the Mobile WiMax standards process by a couple years. Another hurdle is whether there is indeed a large requirement for 155 mph (250 kph) handoff. In addition, we do not know what effect Mobile WiMax being nationalized in Korea will have. And, very importantly, cellular companies may not be willing to undercut their 3G service. Certainly, we can assume that the US$100 billion investment in 3G spectrum by the European mobile carriers alone might be weighed against a workable Mobile-Fi standard. With the possibility of proprietary systems (e.g., WiBro, Flash-OFDM) being in place a number of years before Mobile-Fi is standardized, the likelihood is that by then, Mobile WiMax will be backward compatible with WiMax fixed services. Licensed or unlicensed, Mobile-Fi will not be ubiquitous, and WiMax probably will.
