Did you know this about MOBILE PHONE RADIATION...

Quanta Monitor is a free Android app that measures the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) output, power density, and cumulative exposure to radiofrequency emissions from your phone. Quanta Guard takes things a step further by automatically cutting off your data connection if safe SAR limits are exceeded. We tried both apps out to see how they work and learn just how much radiation we’re exposed to on a daily basis.

Is cell radiation dangerous?

There’s still a great deal of controversy about how dangerous cell phone radiation really is. The last time the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer reviewed the available evidence on radiofrequency electromagnetic fields it classified them as “possibly carcinogenic to humans.”

That was in 2011, and new evidence is emerging all the time. There’s a growing movement that’s convinced of the cancer risk and actively campaigning for a new assessment, but it’s a difficult topic to pick through. People on both sides of the debate can sound hyperbolic. At the extremes, it’s compared to smoking on the one side, but then it’s presented as completely harmless on the other. What’s lacking for most consumers is accurate information on exposure. The FCC has set a limit for public exposure from cell phones as a SAR level of 1.6 watts per kilogram.

“There are legal SAR limits, like the U.S. limit of 1.6w/kg, but no one is making sure that these levels are not exceeded when the phone is next to your skin or in your pocket,” explained Pasi Ala-Mieto, COO of Cellraid.

Cellraid’s apps track radiation levels

The Quanta Guard app is designed so that it automatically cuts your data connection if the SAR level of 1.6w/kg is exceeded. It actually has a few different guard modes, so you can also set it up to cut the data connection when the SAR level is exceeded and the phone is in your pocket, next to your ear, or in your hand, but not when it has been left on the table.

Cellraid was founded by experienced mobile phone industry veterans, including COO, Pasi Ala-Mieto, who worked at Nokia, then the wider telecom industry, for two decades. The company also offers the Quanta Pro app which, is aimed at operators and telecom authorities to measure the total level of RF exposure from the phone, the network, Wi-Fi, and other sources.

“Most telecom authorities and operators only measure downlink (antennas),” explains Ala-Mieto. “Which is not significant for the consumer at all. As you will see, the main source is the phone itself, not antennas.”


Currently, the Quanta Guard app only works with Android phones up to version 4.4, more recent Android releases don’t support data toggling and neither does iOS, so the app can’t cut your connection if safe levels are breached. Ala-Mieto is keen to work directly with Apple and Google to reduce RF exposure levels on all iPhones and Android phones in the future.

You can still use Quanta Guard to get an idea of what levels your device is operating at. The accuracy of the readings also depends to some extent on the phone manufacturer, but Ala-Mieto claims the margin of error is less than 1.0 SAR for 95 percent of the phones out there, and falls to 0.5 SAR for the 40 percent that offer more accurate reporting.

Can this app protect you from your phone?

I tried the Quanta Monitor app out with my Samsung Galaxy Note 5, and the results were erratic. While connected to Wi-Fi, the SAR levels stayed firmly in the green, but as soon as I turned Wi-Fi off and switched to the mobile data connection, every few seconds the SAR meter would jump into the red, reporting a reading anywhere from 3.0 w/kg up to 6w/kg. I found the same results with my wife’s Sony Xperia Z1 Compact.

“Power density and SAR levels jump every now and then,” says Ala-Mieto. “They depend on how good coverage you have, or how congested the network is. Also, the SAR level jumps when sending or receiving information, and depending on how close the phone is your body. There are operators that push users onto poor quality 4G networks with very high SAR levels, even when there are better 3G networks with low SAR levels available.”

We do live in an area with patchy reception. Whether these jumps are actually going to cause harm is difficult to say. If it’s on the table or in my hand, then perhaps there’s nothing to worry about, but what if it’s in my pocket or pressed up to my ear? More than double the FCC limit certainly seems like cause for concern.

The Cellraid apps are designed to run in the background, constantly monitoring your phone, but it’s also worth noting that Quanta Monitor had a significant impact on battery life, when I tried it. In theory, Quanta Guard will actually extend your battery life, because it reduces exposure by cutting the data connection when the limit is exceeded. It could also liberate network resources, potentially improving the connection quality for more customers by limiting traffic. If it only cuts out when the phone is your pocket, there shouldn’t be a major impact on usability.

“Hopefully, regulators will take action and realize that smartphone usage has changed considerably since 1996, when the existing regulations were established and people just used their phones for calls,” says Ala-Mieto. “20 year-old RF exposure regulations don’t account for the data-hungry way we use smartphones today, when even schoolkids have phones in their pockets 24/7. This is a sensitive topic for the industry, but I strongly believe that the first operators and phone manufacturers to take action will benefit greatly; customers understand the value of being on the safe side.”

Now a smartphone case that reduces cancer risk!

A new smartphone case, made up of same material as NASA spacecraft, claims to reduce cellphone radiation and cancer risks as it cuts the exposure by up to 95 per cent.
Although it still remains unclear as to exactly how bad the problem of cellphone radiation is, the WHO has already reclassified it as “potentially carcinogenic for humans.”
The manufacturer claims to resolve the problems associated with mobile devices of emitting microwave energy as majority of it is absorbed by the heads and bodies of phone users while making calls.
The accessory, which is available for a range of different smartphones, claims to redirect radiation away from the user and reduce exposure by up to 95 per cent.

The latest advance in smartphone technology -- a corded handset?

What might prompt one to buy a large, anti-sleek, hardly cool retro-style handset for a smartphone?
Well, consider your options. Those white ear buds are so tell-tale, and those Bluetooth ear clips have "obnoxious business guy" written all over them.
On the other hand, the retro handset provides a nice weighty, I'm-talking-on-the-phone feel, and that satisfying curly rubber cord reminds one, comfortingly, of what phones are supposed to be like.
And here's another bonus: These larger-than-your-cellphone cellphone attachments apparently protect you from 96% to 99% of the cellphone radiation that the World Health Organization has declared "possibly carcinogenic to humans."
It may not be discreet. It's not exactly cool.  But it's safe!
A company called Yubz started making retro-style handsets in 2000, mostly as a gag gift for those early adapters who abandoned the land line for their cellphone about five years before the rest of us did. After fears of the dangers of cellphone radiation began circulating, the company changed its marketing to include a giant "reduce 96% of radiation" note on the product's packaging materials.
For the aesthetically inclined the quirky design store A + R sells a version by French designer David Turpi in pop colors like yellow and magenta. "Super cool! Super cute!" says the description on the site where it sells for $30.
The budget minded may choose to check out the latest addition to the market, the handset pictured above that is made by a company called IMobifone, which is selling the phone for $25.
The company's website includes images of Jamie Lee Curtis walking on the street with an old-fashioned handset clutched to her ear.

Savannah company releases smartphone app that can help detect melanoma

Now there’s one that can save our lives, and a Savannah-based company is behind it.
MelApp debuted this month for the iPhone. The application, designed to analyze skin lesions like freckles and moles for melanoma risk, is a product of Health Discovery Corporation, an 8-year-old company based in downtown Savannah and run by Dr. Steven Barnhill.
Melanoma is considered the most dangerous form of skin cancer.
Barnhill declined to be interviewed for this story but explained the benefits of MelApp for consumers in a news release issued upon the application’s release.
“Most consumers understand that early detection is critical with a cancer like melanoma; what they need is a reliable technology literally at their fingertips that offers immediate convenience at an affordable price,” Barnhill said. “Now they have it with MelApp,”
MelApp uses the iPhone’s camera, a database of moles and freckles licensed from John Hopkins University Medical Center and GPS technology in assessing risk. Users take a photo of a mole or freckle with the phone camera and use the $1.99 MelApp to enlarge and crop the photo.
Users then answer questions regarding the mole or freckle’s size and development and upload the information through MelApp. The software compares the file to the photos and info of skin lesions in the John Hopkins database and provides a risk assessment.
For those users the software deems at risk for cancer, MelApp can direct them to nearby physicians for a follow-up evaluation, using GPS technology included in the smartphone.
“Nothing can replace doctors or specialists when it comes to diagnosing and treating melanoma,” said Dr. Howard Zaren, who uses similar technology to the MelApp in the ‘mole mapping’ program at the St. Joseph’s/Candler Nancy N. and J.C. Lewis Cancer and Research Pavilion. “But awareness is the basis of all screening. Knowing that you can and should watch out for certain conditions so you can catch them at an early phase is important. This technology certainly has the potential to boost awareness.”
MelApp has met with instant success. Users in 40 countries have already purchased the application, and it ranks among the top-100 highest grossing apps in the health care and fitness category.
But then its popularity should come as no surprise. Melanoma kills one American every hour, according to the American Melanoma Foundation, and World Health Organization statistics show 130,000 cases are diagnosed globally each year.
Melanoma accounts for 80 percent of skin cancer deaths, St. Joseph's/Candler's Zaren said.
Health Discovery Corporation was born in September 2003 following Direct Wireless’ acquisition of the Barnhill Group.

MelApp: How it works
Users download the $1.99 application, take a photo of a mole or freckle with an iPhone camera and answer questions regarding the mole or freckle’s size and its development. Then submit the information for analysis via the application.
MelApp uses mathematical algorithms and image-based pattern recognition technology to evaluate the uploaded image against a database licensed from the John Hopkins University Medical Center and assess risk. The software will return an answer — high-risk or low-risk for melanoma — within seconds based on five parameters, including mole asymmetry and the rate at which the skin lesion developed.
