Loss of Goodwill or $1 Billion loss: Ban on Samsung Galaxy Note 7 from usage inside aircraft

For the first time ever in India or any other country, a mobile phone has been banned from usage inside aircraft, because of it’s dangerous battery, which can explode any moment.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7, the latest offering from Samsung has been deemed as dangerous and explosive, just like a time-bomb. Such is the scare that The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked all airports to stop passengers from using the phone inside the plane.
And in case the passenger is carrying it in the check-in baggage, then the handset should be kept switched off.
In an order, DGCA said, “In light of the recent incidents involving battery incidents with Samsung about its Galaxy Note 7 devices globally, traveling public and airlines are advised not to switch on these mobiles during the flight or stow them in any checked in baggage,”
It’s not DGCA alone which has triggered such panic warning to protect aircrafts from getting exploded – official airline controls of half a dozen countries, including USA has issued such warnings.
US Federal Aviation Authority had issued similar orders few days back, notifying all passengers not to carry the defective Samsung Galaxy Note 7 handsets while travelling in aircrafts. Later on, Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia and Delta also issued similar warnings.
Interestingly, Korean Air, the official airlines of South Korea, where Samsung is headquartered, hasn’t issued any such warning. As per the officials, they have met Samsung officials, and they have been asked to allow to passengers to use Note 7 inside aircrafts.
But other airlines are not taking the risk, and have issued prior warning to safeguard all the passengers and the aircraft. Even Samsung and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission have asked buyers not to use Note 7 handsets.

Recall Can Cost Samsung $1 billion; But Loss of Goodwill Is More Serious

Due to repeated incidents of batteries getting exploded, Samsung has already said that they will recall 2.5 million Note 7 handsets, all over the world. All customers will get new Note 7 handsets, and in India, due to the delay of shipment, Samsung is also giving a free VR Gear to compensate the delay.
However, this recall may cost Samsung over $1 billion in expenses, as per estimates from Bloomberg from Credit Suisse Group AG, Daishin Securities Co. and Pelham Smithers Associates
Although Samsung hasn’t yet officially acknowledged the expenses incurred for recalling over 2.5 million handsets, Koh Dong Jin, the head of Samsung’s smartphone business said that it was a ‘heartbreaking amount’.
As per available reports, 70% of the faulty batteries were supplied by Samsung, however, 30% of them were supplied by Amperex Technology, which is a company based in China.
Besides the financial losses, it’s the loss of goodwill and reputation which is being talked about most in this case. Airlines regulators banning the usage of a phone is a never-before-heard news, and the overall impression of Samsung has certainly taken a beating here.
Chang Sea Jin, a professor at the National University of Singapore, said, “The potential damage to reputation is far greater than short-term financial losses,”

NASA builds $3,500 PhoneSat satellite using a smartphone

Historically, sending anything into space has been a very expensive endeavor regardless of whether its a new satellite or a manned spacecraft. However, NASA has been working to cut the cost of building and launching new satellites, and has turned to off-the-shelf components to drastically lower the price. The end result is a satellite that costs just $3,500 to build.

The NASA project investigating these cheap satellite designs is called PhoneSat. The team is based at the Ames Research Center and has been rapidly prototyping a number of cheap satellite designs. The key to keeping costs down is using components that are widely available and combine a number of features into a single device.


The heart of the PhoneSat satellites is a smartphone. Using a smartphone makes a lot of sense as you are only spending hundreds of dollars to purchase one, and in return you get a fast processor, a fully-functional and reliable operating system, cameras, GPS, radio, and several supporting sensors on board. There’s also the added bonus of easily being able to upgrade the software in the phone to add new functionality.
While using common components may keep the build cost to a minimum, it also means launching a PhoneSat is cheap too. A typical PhoneSat satellite weighs less than 4 pounds and takes the form of a cube no more than 4-inches wide.

NASA has been testing PhoneSat 1.0 ready for a launch into orbit using a Taurus II rocket later this year. It relies on a Nexus One smartphone and Android OS, and will have the simple mission of capturing images of Earth. PhoneSat 2.0 is also in development and will replace the Nexus One with the more up-to-date Nexus S smartphone. Unlike v1.0 which will just take photos, v2.0 will allow for commands to be sent using a two-way S-band radio and will employ magnetorquer coils to allow for orientation adjustments.

NASA’s work into developing a cheap satellite design will be shared with everyone through the NASA Open Government Plan. That means anyone wishing to launch their own satellite can use PhoneSat as a blueprint. There’s also big plans for the development of future PhoneSat iterations beyond v2.0, which is set to launch in June 2013. For example, there’s already work underway to give PhoneSat 3.0 a foldable design and to carry out a mission focusing on dispersed sensor heliophysics.

Everyone Should Download the ‘Election Protection Smartphone App’

Texting is pretty easy. Voting can be harder. So a bunch of noteworthy organizations — the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, National Association of Latino Appointed and Elected Officials Education Fund, New Organizing Institute, Rock the Vote and Verified Voting Foundation — have teamed up to create "the Election Protection Smartphone Application" for mobile-savvy Americans who can't remember where they put their voting registration forms.
According to their website, the app will allow voters to:
•    Verify their registration;
•    Register to vote;
•    Look up their polling place;
•    Review key voting rules and regulations for their  state;
•    See what type of machine they vote on; and
•    Contact Election Protection via phone or email to report a problem or get answers to their questions.
Now if only the app could tell us who Romney plans on picking for his running mate and save us a few zillion postulating op-eds! Perchance to dream.

Unbreakable: Mesh networks are in your smartphone's future

Micha Benoliel's company, Open Garden, makes a mesh networking utility for Android smartphones and for Windows and Mac laptops (support for iOS is coming). It's a free app that turns your device into a mobile hot spot. No matter how you're connected to the Net (Wi-Fi or cellular), it makes that connection shareable (over Bluetooth) to other Open Garden users. Likewise, if you're running the product but don't have a connection to the Net, and you're near a user who does, this service seamlessly gets you online.
Benoliel says that, for the most part, carriers and ISPs welcome technologies that improve bandwidth for customers and that also lower power requirements (connecting to a nearby hot spot over Bluetooth takes a lot less power than linking to a cell tower). "The only way to improve the wireless networks is to increase the density of microcells or hot spots. I think carriers really understand that," he says. His pitch: "We turn every device into a hot spot... and we improve the network itself."
Sri Srikrishna was the founding CTO of the mesh networking company Tropos (recently acquired by ABB), and is now working on bringing mesh technologies to populations where today's standard wireless networking technologies are insufficient, or are blocked. See his paper, "SocialMesh: Can Networks of Meshed Smartphones Ensure Public Access to Twitter During an Attack?"
Srikrisha says it's time to do two things for people who don't have reliable means to connect to the global net. First of all, we can make better, more frequency-agile radios. Second: Mesh them together.

Telecoms get behind Firefox smartphone platform

Mozilla Firefox LogoA new operating system for mobile phones akin to the Mozilla Firefox Internet browser has gotten the backing of several major telecom companies, turning up the heat on Google and Apple in the smartphone market.

Mozilla said Monday that mobile network operators Deutsche Telekom, Sprint, Smart, Telecom Italia, Telenor and Etisalat are backing the Firefox platform.

The non-profit that evolved from Netscape after the browser wars 14 years ago, said phone makers ZTE and TCL communication Technology will roll out the first Firefox OS phones using Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors in early 2013.
