Asus Claims the Title of World’s Smallest Wi-Fi Router

Amongst all of its Windows 8 PCs and tablet announcements at CES, Asus also quietly revealed what it's boasting as the world's smallest Wi-Fi router. And with a form factor only slightly larger than a well-equipped flash drive, the WL-330NUL Pocket Router is the perfect accessory for minimalist road warriors.
Weighing in at just 25 grams, the 802.11b/g/n router includes an ethernet port on one end for sharing a wired connection, and a USB cable on the other for stealing power from a computer. It can also be plugged into an outlet if you want to spare your laptop's battery. For ultra-thin notebooks lacking an ethernet port, the WL-330NUL doubles as a USB ethernet adapter too. As for pricing and availability, that's still to be announced.

A standard 8P8C (often called RJ45) connector ...
EANTC is organizing the 7th edition of the public multi-vendor Carrier Ethernet interoperability test event and showcase. The results are presented at the Carrier Ethernet World Congress in Amsterdam (October 10 - 13)  and the Carrier Ethernet World APAC in Singapore (Nov 30 - Dec 2). The two-week hot staging (September 12-23, 2011) took place at our lab in Berlin.
Our experience shows that the market is steadily developing. Some new developments are breaking ground, also deployments in common areas are very promising. Based on that, we focused on the following areas of Carrier Ethernet innovations this year:
  • IEEE 1588 and SyncE for Clock Synchronization,
  • Ethernet Ring Protection Switching (ERPS) feature interoperability,
  • Service OAM focusing on Performance Monitoring,
  • Microwave as Fiber replacement for common transport technologies,
  • Ethernet Service Activation according to Y.1564.
For further information please contact Kathrin Henze (henze(at)eantc.com).

IEEE ratifies IEEE 802.3bf for Ethernet support of time distribution and synchronization protocols

IEEE LogoImage via Wikipedia ieee8023bf pdf

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), a professional association for the advancement of technology, announced the ratification of IEEE 802.3bf TM -2011, Ethernet support for time synchronization protocols. An amendment to the IEEE 802.3 TM Ethernet standard, IEEE 802.3bf provides the hardware support for time distribution and synchronization protocols, e.g., IEEE 1588 TM and IEEE 802.1AS TM -2011.
This amendment to the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standard paves the way for the rapid adoption of the IEEE 802.1 TM Audio/Video Bridging (AVB) protocol technologies in existing and future networks.

The IEEE 802.3bf standard, ratified May 16, 2011 and developed in close collaboration with the IEEE 802.1 Working Group, addresses the growing demand for an Ethernet physical layer (PHY) agnostic solution for the support of time distribution and synchronization protocols, while minimizing changes to existing Ethernet PHYs and maintaining the layering rules of Ethernet transport. IEEE 802.3bf-2011 provides one of the critical pieces in the overall solution of synchronization over packet networks.

“The audio and video communities have been using Ethernet technologies for years as a high-performance, low-cost transport. IEEE 802.3bf-2011 and the IEEE 802.1 AVB protocol suite allow for precise timing across the network-a critical function for delivery of high-quality audio and video in real time. For the first time, this can be accomplished using interoperable IEEE 802 technologies, rather than many proprietary and incompatible solutions,” said Steve Carlson, chair, IEEE 802.3bf Task Force, president, High Speed Design.

Synchronization in packet-based networks: challenges and solutions

Synchronization in packet-based networks pdf

Access transport networks are evolving from dedicated-service, narrowband and highly
bit-optimized PDH/SDH-based networks to multiservice, wideband and over-provisioned
packet-based networks. At the same time, the demand for greater bandwidth continues
to grow unabated. This demand is being fueled by fi xed and mobile broadband as well
as offerings such as IPTV, video on demand (VoD) and peer-to-peer services.
For high-capacity low-cost services to be commercially viable, operators must decrease
their per-bit production costs. Accordingly, access networks are destined to become
large bit pipes for transporting multiple services. Apart from providing a stipulated
quality of service (QoS) and standard traffi separation, they will offer very little
functionality. To enable the use of standard, cost-effective transport equipment, the
services that use access networks may put only limited requirements on transport.
The passing of reference synchronization sources over transport networks also
becomes an issue as operators move fromtime division multiplexing (TDM) to
asynchronous transport technologies.

Introducing next generation Ethernet/IP-based services over carrier-grade Metro
Ethernet networks yields increases in both complexity and costs for service providers.
These networks facilitate service aggregation and work in concert with
different network infrastructures and tunneling technologies (VLANs, MAC-in-
MAC, and VPLS/MPLS) that provide common Quality of Service (QoS), traffic
engineering, redundancy, and scalability across the service infrastructure. The
JDSU HST-3000, equipped with the Ethernet Service InterfaceModule (SIM) and
mainframe’s VoIP and IP Video options, addresses the broad requirements for
7-layer testing in a rugged, modular platform that is ideal for field use.

Architectural Considerations for Backhaul of 2G/3G LTE Pdf (white paper)

This white paper will initially discuss the migration trends that Cisco sees in Europe in relation to the transport
options for second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) traffic. A more detailed analysis will then examine the options available for transporting Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)/2G (time-division multiplexing [TDM] based) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS)/3G traffic (ATM and Ethernet based) over a converged packet network. Finally, a detailed description will discuss the LTE evolution and the feature requirements it makes on the underlying transport network. A conclusion summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of different transport options (Layer 2 VPN and Layer 3 VPN) under consideration today.
