Apps such as Key Ring and CardStar let you store the information for grocery stores, pharmacies, big-box retailers and other stores. And you get the added benefit of lightening the load of your key chain or wallet.
Key Ring and CardStar are available on the iPhone, Android, BlackBerry and Windows smartphones. A free iPhone app called Passbook also allows you to store loyalty cards, in addition to store coupons, event tickets and other items.
After downloading the app, take a picture of a loyalty card's front and back with your smartphone, upload the photos to the app and tag them to the appropriate retailer. The apps have more than 1,500 retailers listed.
If a retailer isn't listed in the app, you can add it under an "other" category. You also can add local businesses, such as a dry cleaners, says Andy Miller, director of mobile products for Constant Contact, which owns CardStar.
To use a card at checkout, a cashier can either scan the card's bar code from the smartphone or type in the member's ID number.
Key Ring also partners with retailers to send users additional promotional offers, says Chris Fagan, CEO of Key Ring. For example, Sears may send a coupon exclusively to Key Ring users. In addition, the app lets you check the balance of any loyalty points you've accrued with certain stores.
