Smartphone app Uber offers ice cream-on-demand service

NRDon't scream for ice cream. Just pick up your smartphone.
Uber, the San Francisco startup known for letting people order private drivers in sleek black cars using a smartphone app, is offering an ice cream-on-demand service - for one day only - in more than three dozen cities around the world, including New York, Philadelphia, London, Singapore and Rome.
"In San Francisco last year, we had so much demand that in order for everyone to get ice cream, we would have had to have 1,000 trucks on the road," Uber CEO Travis Kalanick said. "That's a city with 1,500 cabs."
On normal days, Uber lets people order a ride in a taxi, a regular car, a high-end sedan or an SUV using its smartphone app, after they register for the service with their credit card information. Rates depend on where you are. In San Francisco, for example, a ride from the San Francisco airport to the city ranges from $50 to $85.

Five most innovative UK Kickstarter projects

As Kickstarter UK breaks the £2 million mark for crowdsourced funding since its launch a month ago, Jennifer O'Mahony takes a look at five of the best projects on the British version of the site.

Right now on Kickstarter, the following five projects are seeking funding or have already been successful in attracting tens of thousands of pounds, from bamboo underwear to bakeries and bear-fighting computer games.

The community bakery in Liverpool
Ladies retro- available in all colours. What: "We are a group of Anfield residents working to re-open our local bakery in community ownership, in a part of Liverpool where the community has lost many of its resources and amenities. Our neighbourhood, home of the famous Liverpool Football Club, has been caught up in regeneration politics for nearly 15 years.
Bamboo underwear
What: "Using art, bamboo, recycled paper and empowerment, we intend to make the rather bland luxury underwear market interesting". - Hamish Lawson, project creator.
Poster Option 1

The hipster computer game that involves beating up bears
What: "Fist of Awesome is a time-travelling-lumberjack-em-up, a sorely underrepresented genre by anyone's metric. It's a modern homage to classics like Streets of Rage and Final Fight, but with more time travel and lumberjacks.
"The hero, Tim Burr, is a forest dwelling tree feller who gets caught up in a needlessly complex interstellar plot to enslave Earth by populating history with homicidal wild animals The game takes place over a number of time periods, features original 2D art and animation throughout, and is to my knowledge, the only game that lets you punch a full grown grizzly bear in the face." - Nicoll Hunt, project creator

The tea truck improving the Londoner's daily brew
What: "Our choices as tea drinkers are limited to one or two types, produced from a box of bags on top of the coffee machine, the same brand of which you have in your cupboard at home. There’s no magic; there’s no theatre. Instead, in exchange for our hard-earned cash, we are presented with a curiously-frothy cup of not-quite-hot-enough water with a bag hidden somewhere in the murky depths.
"That’s what I wanted to change, by offering fellow tea-drinkers the same quality experience that my coffee-junkie friends currently enjoy. A Good & Proper cup of tea....finally." - Emilie Holmes, project creator

The ostrich head pillow
What: "Ostrich Pillow is a revolutionary new product to enable easy power naps anytime, everywhere, Ostrich Pillow‘s unique design offers a micro environment in which to take a cosy and comfortable power nap at ease". - Kawamura Ganjavian, project creator

Researchers have developed a new smartphone app that allows you to scan and pay for goods with your phone, without having to unload the trolley.
Sainsbury's supermarket in London is currently testing the new Scan and Go app that allows users to bag their shopping up as they walk around the store and pay for them at a self-checkout counter without having to unload.
Customers scan the a Quick Response or QR codes on packaging or on the shelf next to the pricing information using their mobile phone camera, the 'Daily Mail' reported.
The innovative programme even directs customers around the store according to the items on their shopping list potentially saving even more time. Loose items like fruit and vegetables are weighed on scales, and a QR code is printed out which can be scanned by the app.
A learning function monitors spending habits and flashes up special offers depending on the shopper's whereabouts in the the store.
Critics suggest the system will enable supermarkets to cut back on staff and effectively spy on their customers by monitoring their spending habits.

British student creates smartphone made from BAMBOO

Kieron Scott-Woodhouse, from Shepherds Bush in London, plans to release his product in the UK and throughout Europe later this year.A smartphone made out of bamboo has been designed by a British student.
Kieron-Scott Woodhouse, from Shepherds Bush in London, plans to release his product in the UK and throughout Europe later this year.
The 23-year-old, who studies product design at Middlesex University, was frustrated with the lack of variety in the mobile phone market so designed the bamboo handset in his own time.

Kieron-Scott Woodhouse, from Shepherds Bush in London, plans to release his product in the UK and throughout Europe later this year
Made from four-year-old organically-grown bamboo, which has been specially treated to ensure durability, the ADzero runs on the Android operating system and is about half the size of an iPhone.

Like many phones it will include a camera, but ADzero features technology called a ‘ring flash’ not available on any current mobile phone.
A circular photographic flash around the camera’s lens ensures very even illumination and minimises shadows.
Mr Woodhouse said he had been overwhelmed with support for his product.
He said: 'Bamboo may seem like a strange material to use for a phone, but it’s actually extremely strong and very durable, perfect qualities for this kind of application.

'The whole experience so far has been incredible and completely unexpected. I can’t wait to see my mobile phone in shops this year.'
Mr Woodhouse designed the phone initially just for the Chinese market.
He picked bamboo, which must be four-years-old, as it is a sustainable material that can be sourced locally.
However, he was surprised to discover many people were fans of his design at London Design Week last year and he decided to publicise his work on the internet.
This led to him being contacted by technology entrepreneur Adzero and it will now be sold in the UK.
As well as being food for pandas, bamboo is used in Asia for furniture and grows quickly.
Dr Andy Bardill, Mr Woodhouse's tutor and Middlesex University’s product design and engineering director of programmes, said: 'The web has opened up the highly competitive design sphere and enabled those with talent to get noticed more easily.
'Kieron-Scott is a remarkable designer and has made the most of the opportunities Middlesex has provided, which put him in good stead to make his new company a real success.'

This Mobile Phone Charger Needs No Electricity (Pan Charger for Mobile Phone)

The year 2000 witnessed our discovery of a oxide compound we have since developed into a material capable of converting heat-waste into electrical energy at unprecedentedly high temperatures. Thus, after a decade of research, we are pleased to confidently announce the establishment of TES NewEnergy
(Thermo Electric Systems and NewEnergy).

TES NewEnergy is born as a result of the work of AIST ( The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology).

TES NewEnergy brings you a world of fresh cost-reducing possibilities,
creating clean energy for incinerators, process plant , industrial furnaces, shipping, fueled vehicles, cookers/water-heaters, ubiquitous machinery etc. We can also provide emergency or back-up energy and even utilize geothermal energy.

We hope you join us as we expand renewable energy, reducing carbon-dioxide levels worldwide
